The Harlan County Ramblers in 1983
I put this picture on my website for more than one reason. First of all; one of the members, Donnie Fisher, is from Wallins, and my classmate from the Wallins Class of 1964. Secondly; Bob Roy's daughter Gail is married to my brother Ronnie Osborne. And last but not least, I love Bluegrass music. I have listened to them play several times before at Bob's house.
They made beautiful music together. Left to Right:Donnie Fisher, Bobby Roy, Kenny Crider, Orby Hunley, Merrell Harrison This group consist of Merrell Harrison, organizer, who was born and raised in Jackson county but lived in Harlan county for many years, Merrell played the mandolin and sang tenor on some of the vocals. He also played fiddle on ocassions; Bobby Roy who was born in Bell county and raised in Harlan county. Bobby was the "Doghouse" bass and sang lead on several vocal numbers.
Kenny Crider was born and raised in Harlan county. Kenny also sang lead on several vocal numbers. Orbie Hunley was born in Bell county and raised in Harlan county. Orbie was one of the better banjo pickers in Southeastern Kentucky. Donnie Fisher was born and raised in Harlan county, Donnie played lead guitar and was lead vocalist at times. The Ramblers were featured at the Harlan County Polk Sallet Festival for many years and also held a Bluegrass Festival in Harlan county each summer for several years
